I wear #glasses. I prefer wire frame/ Ben Franklin style glasses

Some people prefer bold bulky glasses. Some styles are stunning, I love them

But…

If you do, you have something new to worry about:

People thinking you might be a #Meta Creep

'“It was all very cute until the end of the conversation, when one of them was like, ‘So, these glasses have been recording this whole time.’” …Lin was taken aback at the young man not asking permission to film her'

A new app alerts you if someone nearby is wearing smart glasses | TechCrunch

A hobbyist developer's new app, which can detect nearby smart glasses, comes amid resistance to always-on recording and listening devices that invade people's privacy.

oh fucking awesome

interesting little tech arms race, personal space transgression vs protection

@benroyce Weird times, weird times. I also prefer to stay analogue in comparison to that ever-evolving smart surveillance structural proto-fascistoid developments… I like it when my doorbell doesn't know who I am and simply fulfills one purpose: just ring, instead of capturing my face, analyzing my mood, creating a report, and sending that data to Amazon or something similar and then later selling it to the police or other three-letter agencies xD Nowadays https://youtu.be/ESdkAsBCZlo

@nemo

sorry i didn't see your post, i was busy watching the advertisement on my refrigerator's smart screen. the fridge was free to me as long as i have to wait 1 minute every time before opening it, watching ads. it also monitors the contents of my fridge and uploads it, and watches my comings and goings in my kitchen

(/s)

...i really shouldn't be making this joke. i'm sure some slimebag techbro is cooking up this exact scenario in some godforsaken slimebag techbro company right now

@benroyce You mean like this xD hahah xD

Yeah, well, you know the Fediverse is, from what I've read, accessible when posts are public; there's a good chance a slimebag techbro might get inspired by that xD haha

oh fucking hell 😩

@benroyce @fgraver

Tech no brainers have really for very dumb idea a action plan 🤣🤣🤣 ffs

@nemo @benroyce @fgraver

I can't even see the point of a fridge with a screen.

Its generally placed too far away from the rest of the kitchen and in an awkward position to either read recipe content or watch entertainment (whilst waiting for something to cook) and if you are ordering any significant amount of groceries, its surely uncomfortable to do this standing up via a vertical touchscreen..

@vfrmedia @nemo @fgraver

it would be decided with economics. if they cut the price to sell the surveillance people will get it because people are broke

@benroyce @nemo @fgraver

I bought a (normal) fridge freezer last year, freezer in my existing one was about to give up the ghost (I live alone, so luckily I don't put a lot in it so was able to save its contents).

Those with screens are all significantly more expensive than without (even for the same size). This is however in the UK, where consumer and privacy protection regulations are stronger than USA..

@vfrmedia @nemo @fgraver

just wait for the surveillance electric kettles!

as an american, i feel the need to disgust you by divulging that i make tea in the microwave. which will also be surveillance of course

@benroyce @nemo @fgraver

there are already multiple smart/wifi kettles, being marketed all across the UK and the wider Commonwealth.

I'm unsure exactly why anyone would want them (as you still need to physically get to the kettle to pour the water), I presume the app logs the location and time/date of usage which might be of some use to marketers to work out peoples lifestyle patterns (at least aggregated with other data)

@vfrmedia @nemo @fgraver

but the whole appeal of the electric kettle is how low tech it is. it's reassuring in that way. tea is a daily ceremony almost like a religious ceremony in nature. to gadgetize it is to remove all of that. it's like putting wifi in a religious item in a church or temple or mosque, for "convenience." seems like a big turn off

@benroyce
I had not known about your barbarian tendencies previously. I shall have to nervously gulp my instant coffee to compensate.

@vfrmedia @nemo @fgraver

@nzlemming @vfrmedia @nemo @fgraver

i don't know how you knew it, but as someone who daily grinds coffee beans, you succeeded in disgusting ME! 😆

@benroyce
I'm not saying it was your microwave feed, but I'm not saying it wasn't either.

In mitigation, it it Moccona, a Dutch freeze-dried brand of some deliciousness .

@vfrmedia @nemo @fgraver

@nzlemming @vfrmedia @nemo @fgraver

this is sacrilege! this is an outrage! you coffee apostate! you will not present freeze dried anything to me in the presence of the holy bean 😂

@vfrmedia @nemo @benroyce @fgraver absolutely one of the dumbest ideas ever concocted. I've seen companies tout the fact that you can "see what is in your fridge without opening it." Give me a fucking break. The tech exists to gather additional data on users that can be sold to brokers. That is the ONLY reason.

@nemo @benroyce I would prefer the alert to take the form of the battery in the glasses overloading & bursting into flames

Any chance of that ?
