Getting desperate enough to ask gemini for a professional opinion
Extreme technical debt? Don't worry, that can be solved by reinstalling from the original stack of floppy disks. 🤣
@drinfosec.bsky.social This is the result of misdiagnosed problem (FIPS kernel not playing nice with an instrument that plugs in USB C) leading to the uninstall of the apt repo kernel, followed by installation of thr nvidia kernel from their website, followed by a botched attempt to uninstall their kernel which was mistakenly thought to cause the problem. Setting the server follows a 40 page SOP so yeah if I cannot get it up and running we will be reinstalling everything again
@drinfosec.bsky.social the file system failed a few hours latter. New nvme btw... so we will end up checking the disks and then reinstalling
@drinfosec.bsky.social In the process I learned *many things* about putting high speed acquisition devices in FIPS hardened systems. And discovered the wonders of USBFS , URB packet size, process and interrupt pinning etc
Ouch. Hardware failures are never fun. Back in the day, a spinning HD (or a power supply's fan) might *sound* different before completely giving up. It provided a bit of an early warning before failure. Congrats on all the learning stemming from this incident.
