My timeline is nerds excited to go to California interspersed with images of ICE occupied airports and it feels pretty bleak
@BenRiceM I don't know why anyone would come to the US right now
@aleen even travelling within the US seems like a risk I wouldn’t want to take
@BenRiceM @aleen for the GDC conference I’ve seen Rami Ismail (Dutch-Egyptian game dev/speaker) volunteer to take emergency/legal contact info from foreign game devs and make phone calls if they don’t check in after arriving in the US. I’m wondering if we’ll see something similar for WWDC…
@BenRiceM it’s sad.. and kinda disappointing. Everybody talks the talk, but they are still going and spending money there
@BenRiceM what are people going to Cali for, some conference?
@noodlemaz yeah, Apple’s developer conference, WWDC
@BenRiceM huh weird
My partner works for them, it's mostly online now. Don't know why people would travel for it :/

@noodlemaz historically, it was the primary way to have meaningful interactions with people inside Apple, which could occasionally be worth the price of admission

And there was a culture of people going to hang out for the whole week, even if you didn’t have a ticket because of various side events, so it was really the one week of the year where you would see friends from around the world

So it sucks to have to give that up

@BenRiceM he is antisocial so, I guess that explains some of it 😅

Everyone is sacrificing some in-person stuff that used to be fine though. Hardly exclusive to tech. Should be even more online really, none of these things are made even slightly Covid-safe. Very exclusionary and often dangerous.

Got it at the last interest-specific conference we went to last Yr :/

@BenRiceM @jeffwatkins ICE just means it is time to organise a road trip. After all, gas has never been cheaper, right?
