So, I just came out from watching #projecthailmary.

I made the classic mistake and read the book first. Twice. Obviously that means I cannot possibly enjoy the movie.

No, it's a decent rendition. However, I did wonder if the movie is able to exist on its own. It stays fairly true to the book, while skipping all the gritty details and a few plot points. More egregious though, a few things happen that are just completely unexplained, including a main plot point. At some point a previous event that didn't happen in the movie is referenced, which is a little strange.

I wonder if a director's cut will be released that, while still not doing a deep dive into the science, will add some much needed details that just wouldn't fit into the theatrical release.

I didn't read the book. I watched the movie twice, enjoyed it both times, but only on the 2nd viewing did I understand some stuff:
- The journey takes 10 years but feels like 6 due to time dilation.
- The ship is accelerating to Tau Ceti, so there is gravity when Grace awakes, but he becomes weightless when it goes into system orbit.
- The climactic scene near the planet requires the ship going into centrifuge mode to counter/use it's uncontrolled spinning.

I was 'lil confused.

@kcarr2015 and that's just the barely explained stuff. The book gives you a ton of explanation for pretty much everything that's going on that just happens in the movie (and a few things that are skipped - which is probably for the best since the movie is long enough already).

The audio book is highly recommended as well.

I just started the #ProjectHailMary novel after my 3rd watch, and the book explains that:
- Astrophage lives on the sun's surface and absorbs light there. From the movie I thought Atrophophage was sucking the light along the Petrova line. Not sure it matters much. 🤷‍♂️
- because Astrophage emits light in one direction as it is travelling, everything becomes sparkly once you are IN the line, but you can't see it otherwise.

Lotta stuff not explained in the movie.

- Crucially just blocking light; absorption irrelevant here. Algae/particles on the ocean's surface makes it darker below.
- Petrova line, not Patronus line, that's Harry Potter. 😁
- A Petrova line is a bi-directional path astrophage takes between a star and a carbon-rich planet where they reproduce. Could be multiple Petrova lines in a star system.
- The sparkles in the film weren't visible to Grace during EVA; artistic liberty.
