Inside the ‘Americanization’ of Canada’s national parks: The decade-long battle over control of Banff and Jasper

@dmacphee Canada should simply take these parks back from US corporations. The same eminent domain that is used to hand over farmland to Enbridge and other pipeline bandits can also be used to disposess foreign corporations "owning" parks. Perhaps the billionaire class won't be so fond of eminent domain after a few such retakings?

@dmacphee Interesting

the Canadian Anti-Monopoly Project, which looked into the tourism markets in Banff and Jasper last year, and concluded that they operate under an “extreme monopoly.”

...

“This is a company that makes over half of its revenues in our national parks,” Waterous said. “These guys salute to the Star-Spangled Banner.”

...

“They had been increasing prices at close to 10 percent a year—roughly four times the rate of inflation—because of their pricing power,” Waterous said.

Corporate Consolidation Fuels the Decline of Skiing

Most ski resorts operate on vast swaths of land owned by the public. So why has skiing become such a cost-prohibitive pastime for most Americans?

@dmacphee I have to laugh every time I come across the Banff in my feed. My dad always liked to pronounce the 2nd f. So he always spoke it as Banf-f.
