Given that "AI" exists as a technology, and that many don't like the way it's being put to use by "big tech, I often wonder what we should do?

I've been a long time proponent of #OpenSource and am generally tech-positive, so I find it hard to agree with a general stance of thinking technology is "bad" or "evil".

If we want any technology to serve the interests of the people, we need to work to make that happen. Mastodon is a great example of that IMO.

@chris one interesting thing about tbe foss community is that, since a lot of work is voluntary, we tend to mostly work on things that are really useful and well optimized or cheap to have fun with it. So far, ai faces a utility crisis, so it's only natural that the foss community hasn't been playing much with it, especially given the high hardware demand.

@perdidonavida I worry about the general attitude towards AI that's I feel is building though. Maybe that's a bit of an echo-chamber of news though.

I keep hoping for a "Rails of AI" that'll spark some positivity or something.

@chris

When I was a software developer, we always started by defining the need, then looking for a technical solution to that need, not the other way around.

So the question is, what do you need done? Then we can talk about whether a large language model, or some other technology, can be the solution.
