I'm particularly curious about #openSource firmware/ hardware (and how to get things to plug together if I melt every adjacent plastic bit of everything I ever tried to solder like the xt60 connectors.)

@enobacon @Unixbigot

There's gotta be some reasonable and easy to maintain ways to do this, right?

@violetmadder @Unixbigot IIUC, the tsdz2 has open firmware available, and there's vesc (open hardware spec plus vesctool) but the only kits I've managed to plug-and-play [with my two left soldering thumbs] are ebikes.ca ones (which have needed some configuration tuning which makes me wish the controller was open source) or hilltopper, which is so simple I haven't bothered to get inside it, but limited to ~15mph.
@enobacon Just get a hub motor, any $50 brushless motor controller with headset, and get riding. I have not investigated open source controllers (YET). I *have* built my own batteries using good quality battery management systems, and considered designing my own BMS.
