The struggle is real. My friend walking and carrying his skis and poles uphill as he did not have enough grip on the skis. We tried to avoid uphill sections but it is impossible to skip them all in the fjells. From February 2026 ski tour.

@JakeHikes that's quite some snow!
Actually surprised how little there was 🤔
@JakeHikes oh! Okay. Probably not visible on the photo. I just see a lot of white 😉
Yeah, it’s hard to see from the photos. But my friend is walking on top of thin crust of ice, under it is ground. The ice is one of the reason he is walking 🤣
@JakeHikes ahh! Yeah okay. Got it.
@JakeHikes did you carry snow shoes?
During my Sarek crossing the other guys ski bindings failed and despite them carrying spares one of them had to walk the last days on snow shoes. It was relatively flat or downhill by then
I have not. While I always intend to bring a pair, I usually end up leaving them at home due to the amount of gear I already carry. However, for my upcoming hike in April, I will rely solely on snowshoes. I am somewhat concerned that there may not be sufficient snow for skiing throughout the entire two-week trip, so I will bring snowshoes and hiking boots. This way, if the snow melts, I can simply walk back using my hiking boots.
