In a blizzard. Like I said in my earlier post, we spent two nights in a row in a blizzard. This was taken when we could actually see something for a while, and I dared to walk a bit further away from the tent. Alone, I probably would not have dared, but with a friend, finding the way back to the tent is a bit easier if visibility had gotten worse again. The fjell in the background is called Isdalsfjella.

Fjell in flames. The setting sun paints the fjell orange as it disappears for the day.

Dead forest. It was interesting to see that also in Norway and Sweden there are vast dead birch forests, just like in Finnish Lapland. I believe these were killed by the same bug, Epirrita autumnata, a moth whose larvae feed on birch leaves and other plants, which caused widespread birch die-off in Finnish Lapland during 1965–66.

Rakaposhi (7,788m) is a 27th highest peak globally. Known as "Shining Wall," it is renowned for its uninterrupted, steep descent and is situated near the Hunza and Nagar valleys, easily viewed from the Karakoram Highway's "Zero Point".

A lone birch clings to the edge of a snowy cliff. I was surprised by the size of some of these birches, taking into account how high in the fjells we were.

On our way back to Kilpisjärvi on the second last day of our ski tour to Pältsan. Still around 10 km to go to our final wilderness hut, and still unaware that it was only meant for day tours.

I’m starting to think that January–February is my favorite time of the year in the fjells. Sure, there are only a couple of hours of light each day, especially in January. But the light has so much variety, from very delicate and subtle to more dramatic. This example is from our February 2026 ski tour to Pältsan.

Unfrozen spot in a river we used to stalk Rock Ptarmigans. You need to be aware of these spots even in the coldest months in Lapland. Even a small stream can stop water from freezing or keep the ice weak.

My friend escorting his pulka down from Lássávarri. The southern slopes were too steep and partly too rocky for us to ski down, so we had to walk and let our pulkas lead the way. Luckily, they weren’t steep enough for us to worry about avalanches. Otherwise, we would have had to circle back north and find another route down.
