@sundogplanets, Aaron Boley, and I have written an article in The Conversation Canada about the extremely stupid idea of putting a million satellites into orbit as AI data centres. We include some new simulations of how many satellites will be visible in the night sky if this goes ahead (left) compared to all the Starlink satellites already visible today (right). It's bad.

@hannorein @sundogplanets i love your use of the very accurate scientific saying, “very stupid idea”. we need more of this energy in scientific and scholarly writing.

@blogdiva @hannorein @sundogplanets "How to develop the technology needed to disperse waste heat from orbital data centres."

From what physicist are saying, the easy answer to that problem is lol

@blogdiva @hannorein @sundogplanets "The SpaceX filing does not include exact orbits, the size or shape of satellites or the casualty risk from de-orbiting (other than a vague promise that it won’t exceed 0.01 per cent per satellite)."

OK, let me do the math, it's 1 million satellites, right?

1 000 000 × 0.01 ÷ 100 = 100

So, they expect to kill only 100 people. No problem then.
