This isn't your normal "looking for work" post.

I've decided to shut my business and do more volunteer / community work.

If you know of an organisation which could use a board member with strong digital skills, extensive experience in open source and open standards, or cybersecurity please let me know.

Nothing full time. Personal recommendations preferred. Feel free to share.

@Edent holy beans that is a hell of an opportunity for the right orgs. Good luck and may your hunt be fruitful.
@Edent Location/time zone? UK?
@Edent Just the one? I have a list..
@abeorch feel free to make an introduction to any of them 😃
@Edent My first suggestion would be the #RYA but maybe that's more becuase they need someone rather than any knowledge that they actually want someone. You could also talk to someone in the chartiies team at #odgersberndtson - They are an executive search practice.

@Edent my employer (a Scottish charity) places specialist volunteers with charities, based on defined needs. Ranges from board appointments through to an hour or twos advising.

@jbenjamint Thanks! I'll take a look. I am London based, but hopefully some remote opportunities are available.

@Edent thanks. It is pretty much entirely remote. Board roles are obviously a certain commitment but the extent to which general specialist advising / support is given is entirely at the volunteer's discretion - my SVN colleagues operate as the matchmaker and then you decide how far you want to take it. Most volunteering done is a few hours in total, but some volunteers go on to get heavily involved with a charity.

While we work only in Scotland, we do work with a lot of UK-wide charities.

@jbenjamint @Edent I am a director on a couple of local community organisations and the vast majority of meetings are virtual.
If you’re looking for something in England, perhaps the Plunkett Foundation would be of interest https://plunkett.co.uk
They are an organisation dedicated to supporting community enterprise, so you might be of use either in house or with one of their client organisations

@Edent would have to confirm internally but there could interest from my place of work at Awana Digital.

Happy to connect you with the right people if it's mutual :)

Awana Digital • Co-developing Technology for Social Justice

Awana Digital works in solidarity with Indigenous peoples to use technology to defend their rights and fight climate change.

@andrew_chou sounds good. My contact details are on https://edent.tel/
Contact @edent

Terence Eden's contact details - voice, text, fax. OK. Maybe not fax…

@Edent

If you really want to do something very different, given your experience in government, you could join Palantir UK.

As a double agent.

If successful the benefits to the British public would be immense.

@Edent You should definitely join us at DWeb Camp! Many incredible people, groups, and organizations will be there, plenty of opportunities to connect and get involved in key decentralization projects 👀

8–12 July, Alte Hölle, Germany.

DWeb Camp: Root Systems

We invite you to join us at DWeb Camp!

@dweb thank you for the very kind invite. I'm booked with travel that week, but I'll certainly read up about the event.
@Edent Any particular part of the world or sectors?

@noodlemaz I'm in the UK. Happy to help in any anglophone country.

Mainly looking for charities, foundations, or other worthy causes.

@Edent I worked with Friends of Stevens Creek Trail when I was in California, volunteering, lovely bunch.
Big time diff, but!
@Edent Pretty random, but we're in the process of transitioning a paid, web-based AR/VR/3D creation platform to open source - https://www.8thwall.com/blog/post/208587408737/8th-wall-open-source - if that sounds interesting, would love to hear from you!
Goodbye 8thwall.com. Hello 8thwall.org.

We shut down the platform and opened the engine — here’s what that means.

@Edent if you scan down through this pinned post, others have collected quite a few volunteer job boards here

@Edent

while far less glamorous than "board member" I've done similarly on occasion, engaging with a couple non-profits in a generic IT capacity for mundane stuff like cleaning up duplicate records in databases, creating new reports, etc. Things that would cost them hundreds or thousands of dollars to hire someone to do, so they just put up with the pain. It could just be running cable or making sure that backups happen & restores can happen. Most places don't need more bureaucratic roles filled, just boots-on-the-ground help.

That said, you'll find the most fulfillment if the org is one that does something important to you. For us, that's usually local orgs that help with social issues.

@Edent @gumnos Can we get seven of you at our sailing club? I have enough data quality issues in a membership of 300 to sink a ship..
@Edent From the outside, it looks like @wikimediauk could use some help on the open source front. (They are doing stellar in other areas.)

@Edent

Maybe @Wtebbens knows of something?

Also would be lovely if you came to https://organizemovementmeetup.org in Sweden in May.

There's also https://www.internetsociety.org/
