Don't say Copilot. ☠️

Refusing any proprietary binary blobs, and thus making the amazing Linux-Libre project obsolete.

@janneke @itsfoss why do you want to make it obsolete?

@4c31 @itsfoss
@lxo
Isn't the best thing to any effort to make itself obsolete?

It means your goals have been embraced and met.

And you can go on to address the next big atrocity?

@itsfoss Lower the volume to what I set BEFORE connecting to BT headset.
@itsfoss
Proper hibernation and a standby from which it wakes up every single time.
@wortezimmer I guess you have a nvidia graphics card too? I heard it should work better with others. @itsfoss

@kleisli
I've never paid attention which graphics card my laptop uses, because l don't use it for gaming or other graphics things, but I'm fairly sure it's not nvidia.

@itsfoss

@itsfoss Run my oscilloscope software.
@itsfoss really hard to suggest something get added when all I want is something less, especially given the recent wave of "age verification" getting baked into systemd and xdg
@itsfoss
every new kernel release shall be introduced by a personal address from Linus Torvalds speech or voice in some kind of messages. Either a text message or a voice mail. Or even as a kernel message in syslog format or motd ( message of the day) on each login.
@enigma @itsfoss Why would you torture the poor guy?
@enigma @itsfoss I'm pretty sure he doesn't communicate for fun.
@bananamangodog
nobody asked him . Why not see it as an honour for him ?
Look , I was asked about a feature in my mind.
You totally misunderstand this as a technical debate.
If you cannot understand nice gestures and only think technically go further
nothing to discuss here.
@itsfoss
@bananamangodog
just last note on your opinion . Pretty sure he loves communicating for fun!
you won't guess why ? Torvalds first biographie about Linux has the title
"Just for fun"
so, be sure he can
@itsfoss
@itsfoss
in earlier days of Linux there was a simple text DB with 1000s of short phrases or one sentence that greets on every login the entering user. Either proverbs, poems, humour, riddles or quotes from historical masters should motivate the user. Not via internet but updated by its own pkg. It was only modifying /etc/motd automatically by each login but only one time each day. I remember how nice this feature was and I miss it
@enigma @itsfoss Is that database today's fortune-mod https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/fortune-mod/, adapted from NetBSD? I think editing motd is a custom addition by a specific sysadmin (a line in crontab), while more commonly I saw it called in each login shell through ~/.profile
Arch Linux - fortune-mod 3.26.1-1 (x86_64)

@makepost @itsfoss
jep the fortune name was missing to me at least - though ( I should have known - and remember better)
Thank you - I will provide it for opensuse asap. This could mean for my company that 100 users will enjoy it after easter 🙂
@makepost @itsfoss the origin of fortune comes from the chinese cookies :-) :-) . After having applied I would like to enhance it for Aerospace business and space crafts . From Kennedys Apollo addresses up to movie quotes like HALfrom Odysee 2001
@itsfoss #Hardenedmalloc #security for all Liunx Distris globally enabled per default.
@nemo @itsfoss https://secureblue.dev is pretty great from what Ive heard so I'm fully on board with this
secureblue: A security-focused desktop and server linux operating system.

A security-focused desktop and server linux operating system.

secureblue
@itsfoss I'd like every distro tot work properly with my scanner and the Simple Scan program. With Mint it's fine, but Bodhi and Void Linux have issues.
Otherwise I don't really miss anything.
@itsfoss Nothing! Everyone always wants to add something to already working things and it always breaks something! But if i had to add something id say better support for live wallpapers! I feel like theres not really actually good live wallpaper solutions.
@itsfoss I would like to press alt-f4 from the desktop and it would ask if I want to shut down, like Windows does. 😊
@itsfoss make it functional by being able to.extend it in Scheme ;)
@itsfoss it would definitely NOT be age verification!
@itsfoss personally I don't need anything else, since I haven't noticed that I need extra functions that are only in windows, although I would like a functional screen reader in wayland since it is quite necessary

@itsfoss

- To not force me to press the power button when out of memory or swap thrashing.
- Better energy and hibernation management. Fans running all the time are not cool.
- A detailed permission system for apps, like Android does or better.
- Run seamlessly Android apps. Waydroid is cool, but it is not seamless enough.
- True convergence, so I can run it in my phone and when I connect to a mouse, keyboard and display I have a full desktop experience.

Sorry, I couldn't pick only one 😉

@itsfoss

Linux phones becoming more popular than Crookle and Crapple.

@itsfoss age verification, integrated AI agent, cloud dependency and security by only allowing apps from verified developers through a single app store.
@itsfoss
Compatibilidad nativa con cualquier aplicación de Windows
@itsfoss a more welcoming community
@shadowwwind
in this sense I meant my wish from a real celebrity person e.g. Torvalds himself to greet one time when new user log in. Also certain kernel release updates or distro upgrades should be finished by a greeting address of a real person who represents the whole Linux development. And it should unite all Linux distros communities.
( from a technic nerd I was asked: what is it good for ? Linus has no time etc )
@itsfoss
@itsfoss No toxicity in it's community would be nice. If you're being toxic online in the linux community, the kernel will notice and give you a point on your linux-license. You'll get on tux's naughty list and won't get all the new shiny things your distro has in store.
@itsfoss ship with GPU usage in system monitor.
@itsfoss a better Visio knock-off

@itsfoss Don't say copilot, eh?

I want a pilot. Like an actual pilot. I want to type "pilot" into the terminal and have my laptop take off and fly about.

@itsfoss

"Don't say Copilot"

But I say #Gemini (the Protocol 😁 of course)

@itsfoss These days I'd rather remove some features from the kernels I use, more than adding new ones... :D
@itsfoss A voluntary anonymous XMR mining based donation system which supports open source projects. Users can choose which projects to support and how many cpu cycles to dedicate. Developers can choose to participate or not.
@itsfoss nothing really. It does what I need it to do. I can't say that about most things.
@itsfoss NOTORIETY, with a touch of COMPATIBILITY
Ensure copied files use the original date created rather than the current date created.

@itsfoss the Monkey's paw finger curls:

Age verification

@itsfoss
Proper support for hardware features that have been there for years.
HDR and tpm2.0 to name 2 of them.
I'll clarify here because I know how people are on here and I already know I will get attacked for saying this. It's not a necessity at all, I am very much aware of this.
For me, it's more of a matter of having the *possibility* to have my OS work nice with everything my hardware is capable of, even if I don't want to enable it.
@itsfoss Because there's something off with having parts of my hardware completely unused because my OS has no idea that it's even a thing.

@itsfoss I use Linux for business administration and communication and loose
significant time storing documents.
I dream of the alternative to standard mouse and keyboard inputs by voice commands, such as: “Save this document in ‘Documents/Personal/Taxes’ with the filename ‘Tax declaration 2025.odt’.”
Better, a voice command as simple as: "Rename this LibreOffice document to 'Tax declaration 2025.odt and store it in folder 'Taxes'." with a warning if the destination isn't clear.

.

@itsfoss few years ago I would say - TPM based drive on-the-go encryption.
But now... let it be more reliable and convenient non-password based authentication.
@itsfoss Better fingerprint reader support. And/or Windows Hello cameras support.
