Does anyone know why my #cat would suddenly choose to randomly drink 'unclean' water instead of his bowl of clean water he's always drank from? My cat's fully outdoors so I obviously can't know for certain what sort of water he drinks when he's away from home, but as far as I'm aware, when he's home, I've never seen him drink anything else but his water I'd replenish everyday but recently, I've caught him a couple of times, drinking water collected from a plastic bag, a puddle from our porch pavement, and today from our fish pond with green, mossy water - even when I put his usual bowl of water right in his face. Idk if this is concerning or what lol, he seems pretty healthy tho.
@irfan given the option our cats also prefer "flavored" water (no accounting for taste)
@daniel dats what i suspect! i'm just concerned if it's safe, but i don't think i've much power to even change their mind lol. at the very least, i've not seen it happen for too long at once - for example, my cat'll do this today, but tomorrow onwards he'll go back to drinking from his bowl as usual. in the meantime, i'm thinking of ways to cater to his taste, safely, e.g. by collecting rainwater and putting it in a separate bowl or something haha.
@irfan @daniel Please, if you try that, please let us know. I am utterly curious.
@irfan Hi, there may be multiple things. Try to avoid paying him too much. One thing can be the container. Is it dark or deep? Too deep and narrow may be an issue, if the bowl changed in particular. Also, cleanliness matters. Change twice a day usual around meal time does the trick. Next is location. Too close to the cat's toilet, too busy/ close to a corridor triggers the cat's instinct that it is not a safe place to eat or drink. Cat's have their wn Feng shui. So somewhere clean and isolated but not encumbered. Lastly, maybe your cat just loves it that way and ultimately, I don't really know. I just happen to live cats, (been) raised (by) cats, so accumulated some things from there and the almighty interwebs 😄📚
