working prototype of MNT Reform Next with MNT Quasar 8550 processor module (based on Qualcomm QCS8550). speedy!
cc @cas
@mntmn damn i wanna daily drive this already 🥹
@cas i'm gonna start doing that right now! need to fix some little things like usb2+sound+backlight pwm, but it's fun already!
(wanted to validate that the Next is indeed future proof)
@mntmn it needs an efficient combustion engine🎇 or a small nuclear power supply☢️ to be future proof, sorry to say 😉
i think the 8550 performance really hits a sweet spot between "faaast" and "not too hot". it's not exactly cheap though. anyway can't wait to get the quasars into beta and production. but first have to ship the reform next itself :D
@mntmn I read that as "16550" and got real confused for a moment. "Yeah, I mean, adding the FIFO was a real treat... oh wait..."
I have a Linux device with an SM8550 in it, it's pretty damn fast for a phone chip (at least from my emulation usage, it seems to be faster than my main laptop);
@mntmn that's a gorgeous looking laptop!
@mntmn with all of these flavours, will you have a comparison chart for those of us who dont completely understand pros/cons and speed differences between the processors?
@mntmn @davec555 Please include non-free blob status in the comparison. You are doing amazing work, so I don’t think there is any need to hide things that aren’t yet optimal.
@jas @davec555 we already do that https://mntre.com/modularity.html#our-cpu-modules scroll down to the table

The MNT Modularity explained.

@mntmn @davec555 Yay! Thank you. What about QCS8550? Any known blobs required for it?

@mntmn Which version of 7zip is this? Am asking because I keep log on multiple machines running 7zip bench, and the metrics change after version 17 …

Benchmarks based on 7zip benchmark

@goetz oh, good to know! 26.00 from debian
@goetz @mntmn Oooh! I have some 7zip results for you, if you like, but mine were with version 16.02. Should I retry with version 17.something?
@goetz i only clicked the link now, very cool resource!

@mntmn Feel free to add an Amiga entry of your choice, our list is quite bleak there :) And as we have an Atari TT listed, the Amiga should go natural!
Just make sure to use 7zip 16 or so.

#7zip

@mntmn You keep posting fastfetch screenshots. Maybe reform-system-image should install a default config with colors that better fit the MNT color scheme? Also, hyfetch can make use of fastfetch data using --backend fastfetch and might have some color presets you could find interesting (see the --preset option)
@josch that's only because i couldn't remember the name "hyfetch'!
@josch here we go! (the X-3 is supposed to be able to go 3ghz+ but who knows)
@mntmn I love what I see there. :D
@mntmn And also nice system stats. :)
@mntmn If I cannot remember such things I tend to use aliases in my shell rc file.
@mntmn Geekbench 6 please! And vs. rockchip would be interesting.
@mntmn I wish I had money so bad. This thing is hecking neat and it's probably just the thing I need.
@mntmn Waiting for the previous MTN Reform model to arrive but looking at this prototype makes me wonder if I should have waited for the Next to be available for purchase
@mntmn Such a beauty!! Way out of my budget but so pretty, and I looove fanless puters.
@mntmn Really exciting! That would put the reform in a spot where I'd prefer it over a used macbook w/ asahi!
@mntmn Definitely liking the look of that!
