gay person: I'm gay

society: ok

bengali: it's actually very different because we have an aloo in our biryani, that soaks up all the flavour and really makes the dish unique

non-bengali: ahahaha don't you people have an aloo in your biryani, no i haven't really had it yet but i don't get it, what does it add

@mehluv I'm in this
@mehluv by the time I made up my mind to try Bengali biriyani (shudders!), I got told no good place exists in Mumbai and that I should try Bengali biriyani from Kolkata or something...

@viz oh i did find a few decent places for kolkata biryani in mumbai, there are enough of them nearby. i'm in pune rn and there are barely any.

but also, i'll say there are two things to keep in mind

  • people generally recommend not going to restaurants that have their childhood cuisine outside of their home base. i think that's silly, of course nothing is going to taste like the food of your childhood. a close approximation 1000 kilometres away is good enough
  • bengalis are notoriously excessive with their food criticism. you will barely ever see a kolkata restaurant on zomato reaching above 4.2 for example.
  • @mehluv name drop a few?

    I agree on both accounts. Whenever I go to a south Indian restaurant here, I complain about something but I was more grateful than anything else to find these during my clg days. Now, I act all like a judge in masterchef as I drink filter coffee with an appalled face at the price. (Curse you Anna idli...)

    @viz hmm i don't remember any except Kolkata Konnection right now, but idk if it survived the pandemic. I used to work in the city 2019-2020 and was stuck during the pandemic.
    @mehluv aahhhh cool, np. I will look it up.
