Across the state, people have rejected the two usual parties. Make no mistake, Labor have won in a landslide, but they can’t ignore the fact that their vote across the state has fallen by one and a half points. And loyal members of the Liberal and National Parties must be feeling pretty irrelevant right now, with the Libs down by a massive 17 points!
One Nation has picked up almost nineteen points while the Greens gained about the one and a half points that Labor lost.
These numbers are a bit concerning given how they may translate in the next federal election, with the prospect of more One Nation Senators in the Upper House.
Given the support for, and airtime given to, One Nation by the Murdoch media, the increase in their vote probably shouldn’t come as a surprise. Pro-One Nation media has been all over Meta social media, usually promoted by News.com.au, and commercial television networks, Seven, Nine, and Ten.
Despite the huge swing to One Nation, it would seem that they accomplished this by taking the vote from the Liberals, possibly helped by the defections of the likes of Cory Bernardi, James Ashby, and Barnaby Joyce, who are all big names in Australian right-wing politics.
I’m still pleased by how devastated the Liberal and National Parties have become, though a little apprehensive about a Labor government that has every chance to do great things, but will probably continue to be Liberal Lite.
There is some hope!
