#capoeira today: Class ended with martelo/rasteira practice. We were only supposed to place the rasteira foot, not pull it, but my training partner kept pulling their foot to try to sweep mine. Since I'm 1.5x their weight and have solid structure from years of kung fu, I wasn't going anywhere.

After 5 attempted rasteira sweeps I got tired of it and pulled my foot back to disrupt their structure. No one moves the Urso. Contramestra called an end to the drill after that.

Also had lunch with a classmate and they asked about my martial arts history. Only after saying all of it did I realize how much it was:

-College capoeira until I broke my ankle
-Wing chun kung fu until I moved to a new town
-Iaijutsu for 7 years until my son was born
-Wing chun in the meantime until my instructor moved
-Wing chun with another instructor until I moved
-Wing chun in new city until I got tired of the group
-Capoeira again to date

@zompus not keeping going through life with martial arts is one of my few regrets. Did karate as a kid until moving countries, never picked it back up until my own kid got interested... Spent five years getting really back into karate, burned out just below dan grade level; five years doing iaido (stumbled into that, admiring their costumes!), burned out just below proper shinken level

The samba's lovely, the capoeira i don't know is for me. Maybe it's not too late to practise kung fu :)

@ultrazool I got to nidan in iaijutsu. In our group getting dan level allows one to wear a tanto with the iaito, but I never got around to getting one.

I kind of regret not going further in wing chun or iaijutsu, but life transitions really get in the way of training. Also if I don't vibe with a new group I'm not going to keep going, that's just punishing myself.

@zompus similar, was training towards sandan, promising students were encouraged to invest in a shinken at that stage (non-negotiable for higher grades) and i ... wasn't. Don't think i ever would have got one, at that expense (at least 3 grand, but easily 6) plus not wanting to slice myself up, not a soul in that club didn't have the scar through the flap of skin below the thumb 😱 well off out of it. Very much enjoyed the grinding monotony of the practise while it lasted, though
