It was late 2021 when my friend Marianne twisted my arm to run a capoeira angola workshop one weekend in Christchurch. And that led to regular classes.

Capoeira groups are always marginal in places where noone knows what capoeira is. You're mostly dependent on people who have come from somewhere else where it's better known, and by nature those people move on, and it's hard maintaining a core so that newcomers don't turn up and find no other students.

But today I had 9 people turn up to a roda in town. Which might not sound like a lot, but it is to me. And we all went and ate together after, and the dream of building a little community is still alive...

(I transported all the instruments on my bike too).

A capoeira demonstration stopped the crowd on a side street at the Boundary Street Festival and a ring formed instinctively. I watched two full sequences before touching the shutter — capoeira at speed requires pre-visualisation rather than reaction; the inversions happen faster than expected. By the third sequence I could frame the space and wait for the body to arrive. The ring of spectators is what makes it an image rather than an acrobatics photograph.

Also aside from the one big injury of breaking my ankle, not doing capoeira in my 20's when I was young and "invincible" means I don't have a lot of injuries holding me back today. My classmate has Many Problems with his knees and shoulders leftover from his post-college capoeira practice.

The other college friends kept up with #capoeira more than I did so it would be logical to think about the path not taken. I could have been a contramestre had I continued. I stopped because the group I found after college didn't click with me and I went off and did other martial arts.

It sounds like I missed a lot of toxic instructors between 2002 and 2018, so I don't regret that. One of the reasons I did come back was that my contramestra is an American woman, rather than a Brazilian man.

Professor Galo: Do you remember not knowing how to play berimbau?

Me: ....I remember buying my first berimbau at Mestre Acordeon's place but I don't remember not being able to play it. I just started going for it.

Normally at capoeria events I don't get to play instruments or music because I'm not high enough ranked. The professors and mestres are usually off in the corner doing their thing. This time since I was old friends with the guests I was welcomed to play music as an equal, even though I'm lower ranked. It's nice to be included.
