Has anyone tried using compressed coconut fibers for reptile bedding for potting soil/seed starting? (Some free stuff on the curb, wondering if it's treated or just plain old shredded coconut, i.e. coir.) #random #reptiles #coconut #coir

@ai6yr I’ve used coconut coir for starting seeds, though I usually just use potting soil

It’s also good for mixing in to soil to improve drainage… I think it’s a typical ingredient in potting soils

I’m not a reptile expert, but my inclination would be to avoid stuff from an unknown source, they’re more sensitive to contamination than plants

@scm It's for plants, just saw some "for reptiles" here on the curb, brand new package for free... figured if it's good for starting seeds I'd snag it.
@ai6yr I can see it being good for reptiles. I mostly know it’s cheap, and seems like it should be pretty environmentally friendly, since it’s a waste product rather than something harvested for the purpose like sphagnum moss
