Has anyone tried using compressed coconut fibers for reptile bedding for potting soil/seed starting? (Some free stuff on the curb, wondering if it's treated or just plain old shredded coconut, i.e. coir.) #random #reptiles #coconut #coir
Hmm, I guess I should have snagged it. I will go get it tomorrow if it's still there, LOL. Looks like it's just coir, which is now the recommended medium for starting plants (it's renewable, unlike peat).
@ai6yr have you looked into burlap and jute?
@bedirthan Nope, haven't tried those yet!
@ai6yr some roasters will have a ton extra of both of those regularly
@bedirthan Oooh, that's good to know!

@ai6yr

I got some compressed coconut fiber material from the garden store this spring for my seed starting. It's working quite well for that, although I haven't tried taking the plants out of their starting containers yet.

@ai6yr

No idea about the reptile stuff though.

@ai6yr some friends are fond of planting with coconut fibres, and I'd like to try it.
@ai6yr if its not in original packaging, I would only add it to the compost pile that gets hot. I would not take a chance of seed starting or growing in it.

@ai6yr I’ve used coconut coir for starting seeds, though I usually just use potting soil

It’s also good for mixing in to soil to improve drainage… I think it’s a typical ingredient in potting soils

I’m not a reptile expert, but my inclination would be to avoid stuff from an unknown source, they’re more sensitive to contamination than plants

@scm It's for plants, just saw some "for reptiles" here on the curb, brand new package for free... figured if it's good for starting seeds I'd snag it.
@ai6yr I can see it being good for reptiles. I mostly know it’s cheap, and seems like it should be pretty environmentally friendly, since it’s a waste product rather than something harvested for the purpose like sphagnum moss

@ai6yr

I would suggest mixing it with other stuff, rather than using it plain. It would be pretty difficult soil for plants to cope with, by itself. But it's fine in a mix

@ai6yr If it is labeled for reptiles and not specifically for plants I would soak in in several rounds of water first before using it for seeds/plants. Raw coir can often have a high salt content that isn’t good for plants.
@ai6yr I used it for my tortoise, and its great for starting plants.
@LittleYetFierce Cool! I will snag it if it's still on the curb then lol.
@ai6yr I do prefer this kind over the blocks
@ai6yr Coconut coir is highly recommended for getting fig cuttings to root…
@Yumquotient Ooh, great to know! I have several fig trees in back, I actually just trimmed one (a small one) and put those trimmings in our hydroponics setup to hopefully get it to root.
