“He described how every child in this school is entitled under the UN Charter of Human Rights to access information appropriate for their age, as long as it’s not illegal, and that what has happened in Emily’s case sets a worrying precedent.”

School book banning escalates in the UK as Greater Manchester secondary school censors scores of books - Index on Censorship

A school librarian faced a disciplinary hearing and scores of books were removed from her school library after she stocked Laura Bates’ Men Who Hate Women

@peterbrown This is clearly an indication that "Emily's" school's head teacher is the one the students should be protected from. Also If I was in charge of a school I'd be clamouring to hire this woman.

The adults have lost the plot regarding the usefulness of libraries, fiction and, dialogue in general. Welcome to the dark ages my friends. Take care of one another!

@peterbrown this sounds made up to me. Why anonymise the school? Why don't there seem to be any other mentions of this?

@NAB @peterbrown
Why anonymise the school?
- Because "Emily" is afraid of being targeted.

Why no other mention of this?
- Because it's the first time she talks about it.

The claims are verified by the SLG who's seen the supporting evidence.
It's all in the article.

@peterbrown Including 1984 in the list of censored books is just poetic isn't it?
@martv @peterbrown Now Orwell is out of copyright, various epub versions of Nineteen Eighty-Four are available online.
@wood5y @martv @peterbrown
Out of copyright editions of Orwell's "1984," are available online, for now, Steve.
@Guillotine_Jones @martv @peterbrown Orwell spelled out the date in his title, as per the first edition cover below.
@peterbrown
This is awful, the head teacher should be going, not the librarian.
The list of banned books is astounding, some of these are classics. Books should not be banned.
@Sarahw @peterbrown I couldn't help noticing how many of the removed titles I'd read.
@wood5y @peterbrown
Yes, me too.
@wood5y @peterbrown
And, if you don't mind me asking, how fucked up did they make you?
@peterbrown
I wonder why the –King James– bible is not among the banned books? As there is clearly too much violence, incest and manly love in there.
@axel yes and the translation was politically manipulated by the king which is why it’s called the King James version.
@axel @peterbrown the old testament is worse.
@BackFromTheDud @peterbrown
I am neither a christian nor British; isn’t the old testament part of the King James version of the bible?
@axel The evangelical Prods love to drag up parts from it when it suits them (see Leviticus). @peterbrown
@peterbrown I hope the head teacher has an aneurysm. 🤬
