At the moment I’m working on a reimplementation of the elevation profile in #Bikerouter. The current elevation profile preview has a few minor issues that I’d like to fix step by step.

In this thread I’ll share the current state of the work. Please note that everything is still in flux and could change significantly. For me, this is the time to experiment and try things out. That’s why I don’t have a preview version publicly available yet. Sorry for that.

Here’s the first screenshot: a new view of the elevation profile with gradient color‑coding. Visually not much has changed in this mode, but you can see the drag handle that lets you adjust the height of the profile on the screen. Bikerouter remembers the last setting you used and restores it each time the profile is opened.

Teaser: besides gradient color‑coding there will be more display modes 🤓

The new elevation profile offers several display modes. Besides the familiar coloring by slope/gradient (see previous post), you’ll soon be able to see road types like track, path, cycleway, residential road, etc. directly in the profile.

The route’s via points are also visible in the elevation profile, making it easier to relate the profile to the actual route. In the screenshot, waypoint “A” appears on the distance axis.

Another mode encodes the surface characteristics directly in the new elevation profile. Other available display modes will be: way smoothness, allowed maximum speeds, routing costs.

Also visible in the screenshot: the inspector tooltip, which shows the exact details at each point. On the route line in the map view, the currently inspected point is visible as a blue circle.

Finally, the elevation profile can also be zoomed in for closer inspection and once zoomed in, it can be moved freely by dragging around.

I hope that I will find the time soon to shape the feature into a form that I feel confident to release🤞

The new elevation profile can now be tested on https://dev.bikerouter.de

If no major issues arise, you’ll be able to use it on the main Bikerouter site within the next few days.
