Previously with the British SOE, Hall returned with the American Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and trained 3 battalions of resistance fighters.

When she'd been in France with the British Special Operations Executive, the Nazis had nicknamed Hall "the limping lady". This was because she had lost a leg in a shooting accident before the war, and used a prosthetic. She called it 'Cuthbert'.

Planning her escape over the Pyrenees in 1942, Hall told London she was worried about Cuthbert. Not knowing who Cuthbert was, London messaged back:

"If Cuthbert troublesome, eliminate him."
