anyway I used to work at an outsourcing company for Japanese clients and damn their overtime culture was crazy, way worse than the modern 996 culture in China actually

@bootlegrydia my mentor at twitter yi cheng was chinese and he was incredibly smart and kind and he is responsible for an entire revolution in package management. he mentioned 996 to me once. we didn't talk about it much. i think it may have been because i had pushed a work PR on the weekend and he was trying to make sure i knew that wasn't needed (looking out for me). he was very hardworking and like me he chose to do the things that others didn't value because otherwise nobody else would.

twitter was a 9-5 workplace and i never heard of anyone being made to do crunch. i can't really assume what he felt about that so this post is i guess irrelevant. it's just the only time i've heard someone say 996 out loud.
