"She is too scared to use her real name, or allow the school to be named. She fears that the school will try to take legal action against her and does not want to become a public figure, where she worries she may be targeted. Considering the abuse levelled at librarians in the USA for defending their collections, she may have a point."

School book banning escalates in the UK as Greater Manchester secondary school censors scores of books - Index on Censorship

A school librarian faced a disciplinary hearing and scores of books were removed from her school library after she stocked Laura Bates’ Men Who Hate Women

I'm witnessing in action how a trans boy I know online is being massively misgendered by xiaohongshu "feminists" for saying not everyone who has periods is a woman

funny how when its about trans women they would treat the label "woman" as something "holy" to be "defended" but they are so willing to give that "holy" label to someone who is not one at all

I cannot understand why whether sanitary napkins should be provided on trains got trending again on weibo and many cis dudes are massively mad again at the woman who was talking about it

I mean obviously I don't have periods but providing sanitary napkins to those who need them doesn't hurt my interest at all

Once they start demanding a gender field to be compliant with some bs law it'll be too late.

You're falling into it too easily by being dismissive.

As soon you show willingness, even if it's just theater, you'll be quickly cornered into more dumb shit until it's for real.

Having principles is what got us this far, you lazy fucks.

Premature compliance will always smell fishy in opensource.

they dont need to ask that much, in China's case they just made real name identification of mobile phone numbers mandatory and asked for phone numbers (and sometimes facial recognition and ID numbers)

Google has news on what you will need to do for still being able to sideload apps:

* enable developer options
* confirm that you are not tricked
* restart phone and re-authenticate
* wait one day
* confirm with biometrics that you know what you are doing
* decide if you only want unrestricted installs for 1 week or forever
* confirm that you accept the risks
* enjoy the few apps that still have developers motivated to develop for a user-base willing to put up with this

Thinking in a foreign language feels like rendering graphics without GPU acceleration: everything runs on raw CPU, slower and more laborious. After a full day of conversations in English or Japanese, I'm physically exhausted in a way that Korean never does to me

for me having a conversation in Chinese isn't much better; I have to constantly think in real-time to interpret subtext, and it's easy to get exhausted and accidentally say the 'wrong' thing. But English is definitely even worse as that adds an extra layer to process

@julian Yes, that's actually cited in the paper as supporting evidence: swearwords in a foreign language produce weaker physiological responses than in a native one, so it very likely is the same mechanism running in reverse. I personally avoid swearing in foreign languages because I can never be fully sure of the nuance, but I do notice people around me swear more freely in their second languages, which fits the pattern exactly.
