my sun ray 3 thin client is finally up and running!

this might look like an ordinary solaris 10 system, but it's actually a virtual machine running on my host PC set up for remote access via the thin client.
there's also this nifty admin web client you can use to configure it
so, i had no idea about this until just now because i know barely anything about smart cards, but apparently you can insert pretty much any card with an RFID chip and it'll just work as a smart card. when you insert your smart card, it'll give you a new desktop session you can use normally, then you can remove the smart card and it'll go back to whatever desktop session was active before. then you can come back to it later and put the card in either the same sun ray or a different sun ray, and your desktop will be restored. this is apparently called "hotdesking" and it's actually awesome, this is super neat. the reader even lights up when you put a card in it!

...now i would gladly demonstrate this for yall, but i'm using my actual credit card as the smart card for this so i don't think that would be a great idea lmao
well, this would be a lot more fun if my network hadn't suddenly slowed to an absolute crawl for some reason...
@mjdxp presumably it wants the contacts rather than the RFID part
@izzy idk lol, all i know is this works
@mjdxp @izzy oh god, you've summed up my career
@mjdxp I have seen these in an exhibition more than 20 ago now.
They were quite nice although I never saw them used in an actual environment.
Most corporate environments were just using windows.
