Why hadn't I ever seen the inside of a datacenter during my Tumblr days?

I had fun writing this answer. A little bit of Tumblr history.

@marcoarment my humble company also started with rented hardware and actually stayed with it. Up now to about 100-130 servers in various DCs. Never wanted to pay the cloud tax and never had too much reasons to regret that choice.
@marcoarment listening to Build & Analyze back then I always thought the tumblr days were soooo long ago. And it felt like B&A ran for 5 years. 🙈

@marcoarment The difficult thing is to know how to balance between pouring too many hours into something because you have so little hardware, and buying too much hardware resources.

Simplest example is probably whether to have dedicated staging servers or not when deploying. But if your budget is extremely small, then only option you can take is the "more work" approach.
