I just went in for my third dose against Tick-Based Encephalitis, and the lovely person administering the shot told me that they are expecting to be able to provide immunization against Lyme disease either in 2027 or 2028!

Apparently Pfizer has a vaccine currently being trialed in phase 3. And they expect it will go well, which means a vaccine might actually become available soon!

One of my friends in high school got Lyme disease and wasn't able to attend classes for 3-6 months because he was too exhausted.

Being able to vaccinate against that is a really big deal imo.

@yosh It'll be a really big deal if it works & widely rolled out. There must be a significant population living with undiagnosed Lyme. I suspect I was probably infected in childhood or early/mid teens. There is no awareness for low-level chronic symptoms which in retrospect were definitely there. I started getting more severe symptoms aged ~29. I saw about 8 doctors with no diagnosis; my wife eventually figured it out after much research, then it still took 4-5 doctors until someone believed it.

@yosh That would be so great! 💚

I got lyme from a tick once, and it's really scary. Mine developed the classic red circle, and it was in a place I could see while showering, so I got antibiotics in the early phase, but I know so many people who didn't realize it in time, and then after a while it gets really bad. Very sick for months, lasting effects for life. Also, even with the antibiotics, my red circle kept growing for the first few days before it stopped, and it took weeks of slowly getting lighter until it faded away. 😬

@dasgrueneblatt @yosh Same here, and I'd rather not repeat the experience.
@yosh wow, that's exciting!! I just looked it up. Hopefully, if all goes well, it'll be approved quickly in Canada as well...
@yosh Truly a big deal. It would be tremendously reassuring to have another layer of protection.

@yosh

as if RFK will let that see the light of day.

@yosh Cool news. I live in tick central and always wondered why my dog can get vaccinated but I can't.

@yosh

If true this is great news!
