I'm working on cleaning out and resetting my phone. Can I simply use the Samsung browser (and Aurora Store) to avoid logging in to Google at all? (I don't need email on my phone)

Just wondering if there's some unforeseen problem or risk with doing that.

I'm using my "backup" phone (same model, from eBay) to save some of my data and settings before I factory reset my phone to clear out the 15G of "other." I'd like to try avoiding Google products.

Trying Samsung browser on the backup phone, and next to no pages will load. Just white page. Tried mstdn.social. Some news pages will load. Pieces of some pages will load, like the Reddit banner for example.

Obviously it can't be "clear your cache" as it's a new device. Enabled java & cookies.

I am posting fron the "backup" phone, not signed in to Google, but now using Chrome as Samsung wouldn't show any websites.

I wanted to avoid Google products entirely including Chrome but maybe "not signed in" is at least a little better?πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

I saw Samsung identifying my phone as--what was it?--something like "heritage" or "vintage" or "legacy," while it was refusing to captcha me. πŸ˜‚
Trying to download Aurora Store from their website, but now with all the ads they have (the deceptive kinds of ads that are like "Download here!" "Start here!" "Activate your account by clicking this button!" --but it leads to some spam spyware thing) I cannot tell which is the real download. I don't see anything that looks like the apk. WTF. πŸ˜‘

OH WAIT WAIT WAIT, I think I found them. But GEEZ. What a labyrinth it has been.

And now, no idea which release I'm supposed to download.

No wonder people who are not tech-oriented get sucked into consumer monetized surveillance crap.

It's taking me hours upon hours upon days of exploring, re-inventing the goddamn wheel, and having to teach myself reams of stuff JUST to reach for pieces of a Google-free phone. πŸ˜‘

I have a ton of other stuff to do, haven't even cleaned up the dishes from last night, have a household to run and a business to run, haven't even had breakfast. Super irritated. 😠

But I did it!! I'm in! Got Aurora Store up and running. So that when I restore my phone from THIS phone, I'll have Aurora Store available on it without having to go through more Google crap.

*Link ⬇️ for anyone wanting to go straight to that page (SKIP OVER ads in middle and go to bottom where there are folders. I selected "Release" folder and used uppermost listed apk):

Aurora

Aurora OSS - Abode of opensource android apps

Okay well this sucks to learn, as I was simply trying out the recommended F-Droid: πŸ˜₯

https://keepandroidopen.org

Keep Android Open

Advocating for Android as a free, open platform for everyone to build apps on.

My phone is refusing to install the downloaded F-Droid apk no matter what I do πŸ™„

Update: Oh ho ho, you know what. I was accidentally using my soon-to-be reset phone, that is still logged in to Google. Instead of its clone backup, that is NOT logged into Google. Guess what happened when I tried installing it on the Google-less backup clone. That's right, it installed ASAP. 😯

Okay, I now have installed F-Droid, Aurora Store, Firefox, DuckDuckgo, on my restore clone phone (running on wifi).

Both Brave and Vivaldi can't be installed on my phone (presumably too old), and Samsung Browser opens and navigates but doesn't display pages.

I think the only thing left is to grab some bookmarks and pages I frequent. Maybe delete some bulky message threads?

It took me hours to go through all my pages and bookmarks and make sure I grabbed it all (posted some interesting ones on here). Then I had to install Chrome on my desktop  just to get all those bookmarks synced. But now I have imported them to Firefox and can uninstall Chrome again.

But first! Factory reset my phone!
And then Smart Switch the backup clone phone onto it! And then not sign into Google because I have a lot of alternate functions set up to use!!

I'm nervous to reset my phone even though I have been working towards it for days and have backed up everything I want and prepared everything!
My old reset phone is re-activated and allegedly working on "organizing" the transferred backup data! 37 more minutes. I should go to bed. It's four hours past my bedtime.
I admit I am excited to try out using my phone without being signed in to Google. It will be the first time in years!
Granted I am on a Samsung phone. But I did not log in to any Google account no matter how much it tried to force me. This is wild, I feel like a renegade! A dataverse renegade.
So far the only loss I feel is Google Maps; I'm using Open Streets but I have relied a lot on Google Street View and there's nothing comparable.

@_L1vY_

Woohoooooo!!!!!

TYSM for making a route for the rest of us, too!

@NilaJones πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ YMMV!
@_L1vY_ are you signed into a Samsung account?
@ravenonthill Unfortunately had to
@_L1vY_ Android, iOS, they really aren't designed to operate without central administration. The FOSS movement isn't doing terribly well, either.☹️ Still, you've managed to degoogle yourself. I'm impressed.
@ravenonthill I'm nothing if not able to cobble together a janky system held together by bungee cords and sheer force of will πŸ˜‚
@_L1vY_ I use my Fairphone (3) without being logged into Google, and with some very very limited sideloading and F-droid.
@_L1vY_ I dread doing anything or have others because all gets lost anyway...
@Lstn2urmama One day everything will be consolidated 🀞

@_L1vY_

Try logging out of Google.
Restart
Try again

@darkerknight Yeah it was the wrong phone πŸ˜†

@_L1vY_

That sux. I had no trouble on my antique samsung while logged into google.... But that was a couple months ago

@_L1vY_

I am so sorry it is giving you so much hassle! I appreciate you live blogging the process, since I probably need to do it myself

Did you ever get Samsung internet working?

I've never heard of Aurora store before your threads. I think f-droid is the standard non Google place to get apps?

It was easy to download, although iirc, even going through the website might require google play store. Maybe that's why you're not using it?

@NilaJones Aurora does use Google store, BUT the advantage is you can use it via anonymous session without logging into Google. (You can use Google login if you want though).

@_L1vY_

I think I do everything without logging in? The Google store is always asking me to login but there's a thing you can click to skip it

My phone now, is logged in to Gmail

@NilaJones In order to log in to gmail that is, itself, logging into google though πŸ€”
@NilaJones I'm going to not have gmail on my phone after this, if I have to email anyone I'll old-school use my desktop, which is mostly what I do anyway πŸ˜‚

@_L1vY_

Yeah I do understand the concept. That's why I mentioned being logged into Google but still being nagged into log into Google Play. I'm not sure what the difference is

@NilaJones @_L1vY_ I just saw this thread no idea if this helps but
I use brave on both my phones, or Vivaldi (or other browsers). I dont use chrome at all ever.
I use Kmail to get my gmail but it means at least I avoid any AI and don't give google any gmail tracking. I use Msilspring on my Mac or PCs.
I use Fdroid for some apps, they work fine
I dont use any G docs at all. Or G drive at all except for back up. Will be changing that too asap.

This may be useful, or not!

@DrPen @NilaJones

Thanks, I will give all a try at this point, as long as I can get into my social media and do some searches πŸ˜†

@_L1vY_ @NilaJones great! Brave is very good at shutting out all the crap from webpages. Vivaldi also excellent mobile browser. K9 mail is a solid email client. Download Fdroid and have a look at the apps you can get there.
@NilaJones @_L1vY_
I've only just started using f-droid.
I am unsure what apps are in Aurora store.
For my standard browser, I use duckduckgo app. Turn on all privacy features.
I've just found Fossify in f-droid which can replace all the google apps.
But, I also use Signal messenger and Protonmail & drive.
There's also Framasoft apps you could use.
And many other FOSS alternatives, depending on your needs.

@QCCEChris @_L1vY_

Thanks for these tips!

I currently use Firefox, thinking about switching to waterfox

@NilaJones Ooh thanks I don't know Waterfox yet. My kid started using Librewolf before me though so I've been trying that a bit (just on desktop).
@_L1vY_ You can also download Aurora from F-Droid, and it might be easier to get F-Droid from THEIR website, based on what you’ve described so far.
@kevingamin I got it direct from the website but someone may not want to go through that!

@_L1vY_ Same with me, Mother Bones. But either way, They can identify the phone in any way they want. Because it all comes down to whether it is useful to you. And, if it is, that's all that matters... Those phone carriers can try to sell their BS to someone else...

-Have a great weekend.

@rlstone4dems Yes, I will use my old-school tech and devices as long as I possibly can! ✊
@_L1vY_ Definitely a little better. Best to still assume it's snooping on you though.

@_L1vY_ Install the duckduckgo browser. I have it on all my phones.

As a bonus, turn on the feature to block (most) application tracking.

Application tracking seems to have problems if you flip between wifi and cell data the odd time, in which case turn it off and then turn it back on (the usual fix).

@human3500 Trying to download it from the DDG website, and it's forcing me to go to Google Play. (Not signed in to Google). πŸ˜‘
DuckDuckGo Privacy Browser | F-Droid - Free and Open Source Android App Repository

Privacy, simplified

@_L1vY_ @human3500

Oh good, now we get to find out if Google Play works when you are not signed in to Google!

@NilaJones @human3500

No, I backtracked and went to Aurora Store website, and downloaded Aurora Store directly from there. Then I downloaded DDG from Aurora.

@_L1vY_ I sure hope this quest I started you on is worth it. @NilaJones

@human3500 @NilaJones

πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

I just want the browser available when I restore my (current) phone from this backup, so it can be one of the ones I try out on there to see how I like them. You won't have to be responsible for its performance!

@NilaJones
I just tried using Google Play on the not-signed-in phone, and there is no skip option. It requires a sign-in to get in.

Backing up and trying a different route to get Vivaldi!

@human3500

@_L1vY_

Take a look at vivaldi. They are still using the common android platform, but so far seem very good on security.

@_L1vY_ the "Brave browser" is also good.
@_L1vY_ Nope. That's what I do. I have no Google account at all.
@BlueDot Good to know thank you!
@_L1vY_ I have a few Android devices. I avoid logging into Google and use F-Droid and Aurora Store to get apps. None of these devices are Samsung, however, so Samsung may lock things down more than usual.
@_L1vY_
What flavor of OS are you putting on your phone?
