Talk to me about search engines. Google now fills the first dozen results with sponsored links; Bing arbitrarily drops whole chunks of the internet from results; Qwant keeps glitching, failing to load or requiring Captcha for even the simplest search; DuckDuckGo has sponsored links creeping into the first rank of results. I'm working with Brave now, but I'm skeptical. Any suggestions? #searchengines #internet #google #bing #qwant #opensource
UPDATE: Brave search doesn't allow you to exclude specific domains from image searches, which may be a deal-breaker. I don't want my first ten pages of results to all be Getty Images and Istock Photos.
@davidleeholcomb Kagi can, but it’s not free
@davidleeholcomb Kagi maybe but it’s not fantastic. Part of the problem is most of the internet itself is generative shit so even if the search is honest it’s of limited use
@CoolerPseudonym - That's my feeling, too, but it's subjective. I can't decide whether things really are going to shit, or if I'm just experience old-guy nostalgia for the "good old days."
@davidleeholcomb It’s at least somewhat worse than it has been. Though it’s easy to forget how tough it was before google.

@davidleeholcomb

i recently took a look at startpage.com, i don't actually know if i'll stick to it, but seems promising

@fsou - Startpage is on my list. I used it for a while and liked it. I don't remember why I gave it up. Might be worth another look.
