Married, gay, getting on in years. Retired graphic designer for television news. I play the saxophone, grow orchids, write fiction, obsess about political and social trends, and tinker with computers. I'm also an elected official in my little town, heaven help us all.

I used Duolingo for several years, and watched it slowly deteriorate as a language learning tool. Have any viable substitutes emerged? Or has enshittification and AI completely wrecked online language learning forever?
#catsOfMastodon #excuses -- No, I haven't washed the car or watered the plants in the greenhouse or worked on the novel. Can't you see I'm incapacitated?
#catsOfMastodon #saxophone -- According to Lockwood, no saxophone is complete without a cat camping out in the case.
I had a visitor yesterday for a couple of hours. I think he was waiting for one of the rabbits to venture out into the open. Can a bird be "disdainful"? Because that's what this looks like to me.

As a local elected official, I try to get along with everybody, but when the neighbor's dogs tear my favorite jeans trying to get to my flesh, the milk of human kindness curdles a bit.

There are so many things that we take for granted about the people around us. We like to think that they want to do the right thing, and that when they don't, they regret it. But no. That's all too often an unwarranted assumption.

What to do? Hope for the best, but always carry a big stick?

@Jarvis3 -- Pleased to meet you, Jarvis! I just pre-ordered your book for my mother. She's from Rollinsford/Dover/Berwick/Wells, ME, and those parts, but currently spending her golden years in a small town in Alabama. I think a book of essays about life in the shadow of Mt Monadnock will please her to no end.
Happy Caturday to those who celebrate! Lockwood is perfecting his bad-boy come hither look. #caturday #catsOfMastodon

My work-in-progress has been stalled for eight weeks. Usually, I just power through, then go back and tidy the mess later ... but not this time.

Looking over past projects, I realize the issue is always the same: there comes a point at which the story refuses to go where I want it to go, and we fight.

So, it's time: If my characters have a plan they haven't shared with me, then maybe my best bet is just to ride along and see what they have in mind.

Happy #Caturday! Lockwood is conducting an experiment. He wants to see how much of my desk he can occupy at one time, without actually having to get up.
