'He took my son's life for nothing,' says mother of man killed by immigration agent

A year ago this week, Ruben Ray Martinez, a 23-year-old American citizen, was shot and killed by an ICE agent in Texas. While the Department of Homeland Security says Martinez intentionally rammed his vehicle into an agent, recently released body cam footage calls that narrative into question. Geoff Bennett spoke with Rachel Reyes, Ruben Martinez's mother, and her attorney, Charles Stam.

@ai6yr “…body cam footage calls that narrative into question…”
IOW, the fascist pigs are lying!
@su_liam Yes. But there are important legal reasons why the press cannot directly accuse someone of "lying" without solid evidence of that, until someone's been convicted of it or admits it. It can be ruinously expensive. What you or I might consider sufficient evidence (video, etc.) may not meet a court's requirement, and the cost of that difference can be enormous. The court doesn't have be right, by the way, or even fair; it's enough that they're the court.
@wesdym Then I guess I will say it.
@su_liam And you and I can, because we're not professional journalists.
@wesdym Funnily enough, the First Amendment protects us less directly than journalists(and preachers of various stripes), but there is something about the courage that comes when your paycheck doesn’t depend upon mollifying particular powerful people.

@su_liam In my experience, it's less than 1 in 10 people I meet randomly online who are ready to have an adult conversation about this.

You're in the majority.

@wesdym Apparently, this was a deeply offensive thing to say. I guess Wes Dym, too, is in the majority by his assessment🙄. Bye, I guess…
