One thing that seems to come up in anime, at least the cute/fluffy sort that I lean to, is that staying up on New Year’s Eve for the year to turn isn’t so important - what seems to matter is getting up to see the first sunrise of the year.

Interesting, I kind of wonder why that is.

Hatsumode, or the first shrine visit of the year, does also seem to be important, although that’s a little more obvious to me. :)

Presumably because of the incredibly long-standing symbolism in Japan of the rising Sun. Representing, I suppose, the divine Emperor.
