'He took my son's life for nothing,' says mother of man killed by immigration agent

A year ago this week, Ruben Ray Martinez, a 23-year-old American citizen, was shot and killed by an ICE agent in Texas. While the Department of Homeland Security says Martinez intentionally rammed his vehicle into an agent, recently released body cam footage calls that narrative into question. Geoff Bennett spoke with Rachel Reyes, Ruben Martinez's mother, and her attorney, Charles Stam.

@ai6yr “…body cam footage calls that narrative into question…”
IOW, the fascist pigs are lying!
@su_liam Yes. But there are important legal reasons why the press cannot directly accuse someone of "lying" without solid evidence of that, until someone's been convicted of it or admits it. It can be ruinously expensive. What you or I might consider sufficient evidence (video, etc.) may not meet a court's requirement, and the cost of that difference can be enormous. The court doesn't have be right, by the way, or even fair; it's enough that they're the court.

THIS RIGHT HERE. That's why phenomenally dumb words like 'mistruths' & 'falsehoods' are perpetually used by media outlets to describe what Trump says & does.

They might be right but even if they win, the legal costs can sink an entire newspaper or TV station. Lawsuits are disgusting battles of attrition, not unlike 'sieges': Who can stick it out longer.

Against billionaires, media can go bankrupt before the judgment is even passed on the cases being litigated.
