Fantastic!
I grew up in a dairy-farming village next to a colliery town. This gave me a keen sense of natural beauty and a deep suspicion of industry.
The “pit baths” were a bare minimum of decency offered to people who were exploited for pure brute labour. These photos are like a poem to the dignity of those working people.
Thank you!

Wonderful! Thank you so much!
The helmet in the locker room brought tears to my eyes.
My grandfather got his neck broken in the mines. He was lucky to survive, and lucky that the Welfare State had been founded, for healthcare and sick pay. I think about him and the colliery cottage he lived in quite often, but these pictures brought the day to day life of the mines back.
I love seeing what you post. This, though, had a real personal impact, evoking a part of my own life; walking past the colliery into town; practicing in the brass band hut by the bathhouse; my friends’ dad sleeping after a night shift; my uncle’s life as a “water man”; and my grandad’s experiences.
I’m years and miles from that place now. Thank you for showing me the echoes that remain.
