They kicked all of the smart people out of the military who knew the circumstances where this might happen. Power is something you project, once the illusion is broken its gone forever. Better to have an F-35 and no one knows just how powerful and sneaky it is than to use it and remove all doubts.

TBF: When I played the Superweapon General for the first time in Command & Conquer: Zero Hour, that happened to me too.
I don't think any of the individual jets have marginal cost of $200B but so far the US has probably used up or committed to use up a minimum of 200B. Last I heard it was $11B or so in just munitions, don't talk about fuel, combat salaries, etc etc. Not to mention the opportunity cost created by rising fuel prices and eventually food prices and falling availability of goods etc.
