Okay, specifically UK friends (there are a lot of you here, I feel like?). If someone was planning a first trip to the UK--about 11 days, but that includes travel to/from Canada--what would you recommend? Starting from London. I was kind of thinking see London (lots to see?) a few day trips. Then it occurred to me I could take the train to Edinburgh for a few days then fly home from there. I want to resist the temptation to overdo it. And also, you're THERE, y'know?
@Vidyala as has been said, you could easily fill the time with London alone 😁 not that I'm biased, but Colchester is an hour from London on the train and has a cool modern art gallery, a really old castle museum, and a games café 😉
@alicemcalicepants not that you're biased! :D So far no one thinks it's worth going to Edinburgh, full stop? Although you're all too polite to come out and say it. 😂
@Vidyala pahaha I don't know much about Edinburgh (but would like to visit myself it one day!) except to avoid it during August because the festival means the place is rammed full and the price of accommodation goes through the roof 😅
@alicemcalicepants yeaah I heard about that! I will be traveling in late September/early Oct so I'm in the clear there! I've heard it's beautiful there.
@Vidyala Edinburgh is beautiful. You can take overnight or daytime train from Euston Station from London. It is not that difficult to get to. York is nice too. Northumberland coast is beautiful. So if you are planning to go home from Edinburgh might be worth planning some stops along the way. Otherwise I would base in London just make day trips. London is amazing! Miss it a lot still.
@Vidyala @alicemcalicepants depends when your visiting! The Edinburgh Festival during August is amazing but hotels charge a heck of a lot more! Also, if you’re heading north on the train you’ll probably be coming past Sheffield!
@satsuma @alicemcalicepants Coming in September! It looks like the train at…Doncaster is the closest? I keep reading people say to stop at York if you’re going to Edinburgh but Neil, I don’t know, haha. 😆 There’s lots I don’t know, clearly!
@Vidyala @satsuma Doncaster 😨 (I say that, I'm meant to be going there for a family gathering sometime in September 😅)
@alicemcalicepants @satsuma I am Canadian and have no context for this, lol
@Vidyala @satsuma it's... not on the list of must-see places for visitors 😅
@Vidyala @alicemcalicepants It's not that Edinburgh isn't worth going to, it's lovely, but when you're here for 11 days, it's quite a chunk of travel when there's so much to do in London and the South East. Not far from Colchester is the Dedham Vale of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The quintessential English countryside as painted by Constable.
