WordPress(.org) is a single point of control over plugin distribution. One entity controls the directory. One entity controls the update mechanism. One entity decides who gets to ship. I think the future of WordPress product distribution is decentralised: https://coenjacobs.com/blog/future-wordpress-product-distribution-decentralised/
The future of WordPress product distribution is decentralised – Coen Jacobs

@coenjacobs

“The technical project worked. They built it. It was real, it was functional, and it was a serious attempt at solving the structural problem I’m describing.”

You’re tense is incorrect. The project does work, is real, is functional, and continues to be improved.

@andyfragen I chose past tense because the project is effectively dead in the water, as far as I know. But you are absolutely right and I hope I can dedicate some attention to it again, should it be revived.
@coenjacobs As a member of the project why do you say it’s dead. The only thing that happened is they Karim and Joost were unable to get corporate funding. Those building the project are all volunteers.
@andyfragen @coenjacobs we’ve all been volunteers since the beginning. J/K just tried to accelerate and get hosts involved but they don’t want the risks of seeming to go against MM (even though it would help MM)
@skc @andyfragen Sorry gents, I obviously didn't mean it that way, words just came out wrong. I'm clearly not that well versed in the project and should read into the current developments more. Mea culpa!
@coenjacobs You do realize that that whole "centralized area" costs actual real world moneys to maintain and use right? I'm talking millions of dollars every year. If you actually have a better solution, they would probably totally be for it because it would save them MILLIONS OF DOLLARS a year.

@otto42 Of course I do. That's beyond the scope of this argument, imho. This is the gist (from my post): "When a single entity controls the primary distribution channel and the update mechanism, every developer who depends on that channel is operating at the discretion of that entity."

This is not a discussion about money, it's about the ethics and philosophy behind the project and its governance. The money bit complicates things, yes, but is not the main factor.
