OMG!

(Radio-controlled planes are one thing, but here's a radio-controlled plane dropping a radio-controlled GI Joe paratroop with steerable chute!)

@cstross I can feel the jealousy from my old Action Man Red Devil.
@cstross It should have also radio-controlled scream to mimick a broken jaw now.
@cstross
America, fuck yeah!
(I'm saying this ironically, but that remote-control GI Joe parachuting from a radio-controlled plane IS unironically kewl.)

@cstross That’s neat, but IMO not as cool as the RC Buran on its Antonov carrier.
This is a bit long.

@JamesPadraicR @cstross I'm impressed that the Buran was built heavy enough to behave about like the full scale in flight.

@cstross
After posting this I decided to do something I’ve been meaning to do.

@JamesPadraicR @cstross

It flew over Fort Dunlop (in Birmingham UK) when I was working there, but unfortunately there was 10/10ths low cloud and all we got to see was a vague shadow. 3:O((>

@JamesPadraicR @cstross

I saw it at Stansted airport, the only one in the UK with a spare runway long enough for it. (Years before Stansted became a major international airport! It didn't even have a railway line, we had to take a bus from whatever the nearest station was!) It got slightly held up due to fog in the Channel (or something), but came past for a near fly-over before landing anyway. A friend watching cricket at Lord's saw it fly up the Thames...

@JamesPadraicR @cstross And here's my picture of the Enterprise being flown to JFK airport in New York, in April 2012, on its way to the USS Intrepid, an old aircraft carrier that's been turned into a museum.

@JamesPadraicR

There's a documentary about Antonov AN225 "Mriya" at @arte:

@cstross This is going to revolutionise stunt work on the next Mission Impossible movie
@cstross I remember that at least in EU you may get in trouble if you build something that can drop payload in flight. Not sure why though.
@do3cc @cstross We have some unfortunate experiences from 90-80 years ago.
