It’s time for the #thursdayfivelist and today’s theme is ‘Father.’

Things are gonna get weird here. Buckle in. The ‘80s were a weird time.

1. Starting with an old classic that reminds me of my own Pappy whom I lost to poor health when I was young.

Dan Fogelberg, “Leader of the Band” (1981) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KwLbdPIOOkM&list=RDKwLbdPIOOkM&start_radio=1&pp=oAcB

2. Next is a song most of you probably never heard before because you’re too young. When this song came out about teen pregnancy, some Christian-owned radio stations actually refused to play it. 😅

Madonna, “Papa Don’t Preach” (1986) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=G333Is7VPOg&pp=0gcJCZoBo7VqN5tD

3. Despite the Christian Right’s campaign to squish Madonna’s controversial smash hit into oblivion, she rose to the top and stayed there. But Danny Aiello who played the father in Madonna’s video decided to sabotage his own career by making an ‘answer song.’ It is truly awful.

4. Now things get even weirder, but music was like that in the ‘80s. Here’s the incomparable George Michael of Wham! with “Father Figure” (1987). The PMRC did NOT like this song, either!

5. My favorite on the list; was listening to this on my walk today, actually! A fun story about a dad in a modern-day dystopia and a creature in some Scottish loch…

The Police, “Synchronicity II” (1983)
