Remember friends, products can only be exploitative if you can directly witness the exploitation while you're using the product. It's leftist purity politics to suggest otherwise.

Winner's essay, linked in Doctorow's piece, concludes that in some circumstances, products are flexible in the social and political arrangements they afford, and others are not flexible in this regard. Going from there to "those politics are ours to seize and refashion" feels like a pretty fundamental oversimplification
