i told my mom about my backup career plan (simply become a successful independent artist working in a medium I've never worked in significantly before) if the kleptocapitalists who are ripping the figurative copper out of the walls manage to crash the video games industry hard enough that i have to consider regular programming as a backup plan which they're also working around the clock to wall off, and she didn't try to talk me out of it lol
also she said the figurine i made last night is "cute" :D
@aeva one of those "shit's getting really real" moments ^_^

@aeva just think of all the overpowered GPUs you'll get to play with if the whole thing crashes.

Like, sure, you'll have to figure out how to offload rendering sub-tasks onto a machine in a remote data center. But that machine will be *amazing*

@areactis @aeva I hope there will be a flood of cheap GPUs and RAM available when the bubble bursts. Anyone could make better use of it than the slop megacorps hoarding them now.
@aeva I’m planning to just live in a van down by the river.
@__debugbreak I've heard great things about vagrancy
@aeva I guess the good news is that with the AI boosters coming after all white-collar jobs is that suddenly "successful independent artist" or "successful musician" sounds exactly as sensible as a life plan to normies as "soulless paper-pusher at an office 9-to-5"
@aeva want a career that's unlikely to be disrupted by AI in the near future? *leans over conspiratorially* Get into plumbing!
@rygorous @aeva tbh i would like to be less up in plumbing
@mym @aeva wouldn't everyone
@rygorous @mym in theory it should be fun (pipe puzzle mini games are fun that's basically the same thing right) except for the part where you're perpetually covered in plumbing residue
@aeva @mym having done some plumbing maintenance at a big facility looong ago, there was very little putting down of new pipes and absolutely no rotating them while a fluid was slowly approaching, but rather a lot of getting hair balls covered in plumbing residue out of drains
@rygorous @mym video-games lied to us

@aeva @mym not the first time this has happened!

If you've ever been to an actual warehouse, you will find a multitude of features Sokoban never mentioned, among other things:

- standardized, relatively wide aisles in a regular layout instead of a twisty maze
- shelves!!!
- pallets
- forklifts

and there is a distinct lack of workers running around rawdogging crates without pallets or even a hand stacker, pushing them around on the floor

@aeva @mym it is certainly not a glamorous job. it is, however, the sort of thing anyone who can afford to will gladly pay to have someone else deal with

@aeva @mym oh by the way, I don't want to give off the wrong impression here: it's not like I knew (or know) how to properly do this.

This was at my "civil service" (alternative to then still-active draft in Germany) appointment.

So they just paged 18yo me, said "there's the plumbing tools, here's 5 showers where people have complained about clogged drains, you go figure it out" and I did

@rygorous @aeva it's a field with new and exciting opportunities, featuring dynamic environments and next-generation system designs!

@aeva As a graphics programmer, you're probably going to be okay. Well, that is, unless the C-suite drives the entire industry off a cliff and into a volcano, like you mentioned.
@Legit_Spaghetti it gives me hope that basically everyone hates dlss5 (except the nvidia ceo and some boot lickers at digital foundry)

@[email protected] @[email protected] Yeah, the fact that even people like... fighting game content creators... are getting fed up and publicly tearing apart some of this stuff is actually encouraging.
