Anyone know of a good online shopping site where you can get products from japan?
Product cost $12, shipping $27 😵‍💫
At this rate I’ll just DIY Kirby merch
I’ll just buy a pink eye mask, embroider a sleepy Kirby face and call it a day. Yes? No??
@farah @mayintoronto I would not recommend a mask that gives you pink eye.
@farah Oh yeah the shipping is batshit.
@farah And I thought shipping from the US got insane in the last decade.

@static @farah oftentikes that includes customs & handling fees, and OFC most of that is going to the destination country postal service.

  • So yeah, USPS is fucking expensive, slow and they "loose" a ton of stuff in transit...

@kkarhan @farah Back when I was still buying books off Amazon, it was usually cheaper (and faster!) to buy from the UK website. That's how long USPS postage has been expensive and slow.

Still, courier costs are even more expensive. Yes, I've been slugged with those.

@static @kkarhan

USPS wasn't designed to be the fastest, it was designed to go to every house in the US no matter where - something neither of the other companies do despite charging more than double USPS for equivalent services.
Try sending a letter via Fedex and see how far it gets for 73¢.
Also USPS loses fewer packages than the others, they just send a metric ton more so it seems like it.

Personal pet peeve that too many people have fallen for the "privatisation is better" 🐂💩

@farah

@deirdrebeth @static @farah In fact I share your opinion, and if it was my decision, #PostalServices would be nationalized & monopolized and forced to provide services at fair and reasonable rates.

#USPS is just a horrible example, because #DeutschePost / #DHL can do it way better and if you gotta say "D'uh, #Germany is so smol" then consider #RoyalMail & #FrancePost as well...

@farah Not had it quite that bad. Or at least, not when I haven't gone... "hm, maybe I'll add some stuff on the order, so it's closer..." I had an order which was going to cost 30% (more?) of the order cost for shipping. And that was within Canada.
@farah guess: amazon.jp
@Kierkegaanks I don’t think it works unless you have a local account
@farah dunno, I’ve ordered from various localization in and out of eu
@farah I have ordered from nippon shop before.

@farah

I can’t vouch for it, but there is a service called JapanRabbit that buys and ships stuff from Rakuten for you.

Or you could try Rakutenco.jp directly to see what shipping is available

What are you in the market for?

@FlockOfCats Some Kirby merchandise. Can’t find anything decent in the states
@farah
What are you looking for?
If it's something specific, there's probably a website for it.
If it's just general items, I think your best bet is Ebay
@farah I have had success with jbox.com (also their bloggy mailing list emails are generally delightful) but beware, they will make sure to let you also know about their NSFW sister company, jlist.com

@farah if you like traditional Japanese snacks there is a subscription service called sakuraco. They are affiliated with Tokyo treat (that's more ... weird kit kats if that's more your speed)

I did a sakuraco subscription for like two years before stopping only because I wanted to keep it special and rare? Weird I know. The boxes are really thoughtful, there's always something sweet, something salty, something cake-y, some hard candy, a nice thing to keep like a small dish

@catmisgivings @farah I used them ages ago. Nice to hear they're still around

@farah

My friend used to work for a company that would buy for you in Japan, ship giant containers, and then deliver via USPS once it got stateside, but the delay could be in months so they mostly dealt in "high value collectables". Not sure a Kirby mask would count 😐

I vote for home embroidery!

@farah

@farah i've had somewhat good experiences with https://buyee.jp in the past, and they seem to be the official partner of most japanese shopping sites :P
