“Why are you like this?” - the one question from the 21yo that I never really know how to answer
@wendynather Only one answer. "Genetics....Good luck and enjoy the ride."
@wendynather A friend of mine once asked her mother that question. Her mother's answer was, "because of things I tried really hard to make sure never happened to you."
@wendynather Because it was the only available treatment program at the time.

@wendynather

(A more sincere answer might be, because when I was your age the meds we both need didn't exist and we all learned pretty fast that the only other way to gain the approval of the adults and systems around you was to crank your imagination up to 11 and self-medicate on whichever half of your own fight or flight response was the most accessible that day.)

@mhoye @wendynather Ho-ly fuuuuck. This is one of those lightning strike moments for me.

@wendynather

How long have you got?

@wendynather it helps to know the antecedent of "this"
@mweiss *broad handwavey gesture*
@wendynather and therefore your response should be in kind.

@wendynather

how about: "an abundance of talent, mixed with an effervescent sense of humor, and a generous serving of stubbornness and spite"

@wendynather

usually, when my family asks *me* why i'm like this, my response is "i haven't been able to hire anyone else able and willing to be like this".

@wendynather “Picture it. Sicily, 1982…”
@wendynather "Insanity is hereditary; you get it from your kids."

@wendynather

"Environmental pressures, genetics, pure meanness," is usually how I respond to that question.

<3

@wendynather that is a question i've never been asked.
@wendynather Time to turn the tables with a well-placed “I learned it by watching you”?
@jon Are you kidding me? I’ll get grounded!
@wendynather
"A mixture of nature and nurture" is my usual answer
