Okay, someone who knows how domain registrars work…

Why does the transfer process take so long?

I have Bluehost telling me a transfer is approved with the auth code, so it should be transferrable right away. I have Namecheap telling me a domain can transfer in as little as 30 minutes once approved.

It's been almost 24 hours and all I'm told is we have to wait for “THE PROCESS” but no one will tell me what that is.

Bluehost says “the process” takes 5-7 days but is "often faster”. But if Namecheap can receive it in 30 minutes, clearly it's up to the prior registrar simply to release the domain, no?

Or is there actually some uncontrollable background process like propagation that needs to occur? It baffles me because that's a wild range of variability even for DNS.

Apparently Bluehost doesn’t follow “Speed up procedure” so even for an authorized transfer we're subject to ICANN's mandated hold period?

I have never encountered this limitation before. Autho codes have always been provided to speed it up. I guess Bluehost continues to just be bad?

@josh I've transferred a few domains between registrars over the years, and I don't recall the entire process ever taking more than an hour. I suppose it depends on the registrars involved. Once the new registrar has the auth code, usually the old registrar provides a way to transfer the domain quicker, thus avoiding a long wait. Log in to your old registrar and check if that option is available.

@fredonline I've looked into it, yes.

There is something called "Speed up procedure” according to Namecheap. Many registrars support this option. Bluehost (the registrar I am leaving) does not.
