In a rather extreme edition of #LatourDetour, we have now visited Rinku, Izumisano, and Iharanosato, Japan.

@anna Enjoy Kansai! I used to go there once or twice a year (to work with people at Nagoya University), but I haven't been in a couple of years now... I really miss it! (the food, especially 😅)

@the_heruman lol the only vegetarian thing I could find was an egg sandwich 🫠

Thankfully I had scored some vegetarian braised noodles at Hong Kong airport 10 or so hours earlier so I wasn’t suuuuper hungry.

Anyway only had 2.5 hours to play outside then had to go back to airport to catch my flight home

@anna

@anna Ouch, that was a really short stay... You need to go back with more time!

As for the food, yeah, being vegetarian in Japan isn't easy. Even the most basic noodle soup usually has a broth made with pork or fish. There are versions made only with kombu seaweed, but without speaking the language (and especially in a small city) it must be nearly impossible to find.The only "easy" thing that comes to mind is rice and tempura of vegetables...

Have a nice flight back home!

@the_heruman

tempura 🤢

No.

And thanks! I was lucky that my replacement flight from Osaka to Amsterdam was with KLM and they seem to offer vegetarian food by default, so it didn’t matter that I hadn’t had a chance to book a special meal.

Anyway. Typing this while walking to my office in Delft 😭

@anna @the_heruman if you’d have had more time I would have had more tips for veggie food in the region. Next time!
@rieder I checked but the convenience stores you recommended weren’t even open at the train station. After that, I abandoned any plans of finding food and focused on finding geocaches 🤷‍♀️ @the_heruman
