Here's something a lot of companies could learn from Nintendo of all companies. The Switch 2 console has had a text to speech feature, but not for the first time setup. The newest firmware fixed this and now you can hold down a button to turn on speech. Except, any units in the wild won't have this for a while and be on an older version. So what'd Nintendo do? They have a gigantic article on their website detailing how to do the setup blind up to the point where the console will download the update. It even goes into details on how the language select screen looks like, or how to connect an ethernet cable or USB keyboard to enter a wifi password. https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/68477/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xNzczNzM0MDQ1L2dlbi8xNzczNzM0MDQ1L3NpZC9mVUpLWHM3VlVyS1Q0QkpIVXZOMm9hSndZV05LNWslN0VmakVIcUx3MjFQYkV1bE5pUnQzVE9rTFc3a0t1QkI2azZFUWIyTTZibW9qd2UlN0VITm01NUo3UmlfNFlXVjF6QjFZYzBLblNVTkhZeklNRWptenNBUjlwcTR3JTIxJTIx
How to Perform a System Update and Enable Text to Speech During Nintendo Switch 2 First-Time Setup | Nintendo Support

Follow these steps to set up your Nintendo Switch 2 and perform a system update to enable Text to Speech.

@pitermach Honestly its weird seeing Nintendo doing this. Sony and Microsoft's consoles have always been livingroom centerpieces, entertainment hubs, hence the XBOX One branding. Nintendo, meanwhile, has been laser-focused on the gaming aspects. Nobody watches Netflix on a Switch, yet its Nintendo going the extra mile. I'm honestly glad to see them do this, and yeah more companies could learn a thing or two.
@KanawhaCountyWX Fwiw, Sony and Microsoft didn't have to do this because they designed their text to speech better to begin with from the start. On the PS5 all you have to do is leave the console on the welcome screen for a minute and it will start speaking and ask if you want a screen reader, while on the xbox there is a button sequence you can press at any moment to toggle it. From what I heard what happened with Nintendo is someone in Japan started a movement to contact them and make speech available at setup. And yeah to Nintendo's credit they not only fixed this but wrote these instructions. It would have been very easy for them to just say have someone do this part for you as it often sadly happens.
@pitermach Yes, it's well-written like the Komplete Kontrol MK3 documentation by Tim Burgess or something like the QWS manual etc. I don't know who they got to do it, but props to them. We were all discussing it yesterday on the accessible Switch2 WhatsApp group.
@FreakyFwoof @pitermach I just made a text file of those directions, so that we have it, and I assume they would be great if we ever have to sys a factory reset on them.
@pitermach I can't believe, nintendo, the company I always hated for their ableism would do that on their own
@pitermach I hope what they learn is to plan for accessibility from the start
