Israel was successful in making this happen in the US. We cannot allow this to happen here. (re: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-BDS_laws)

The fact that Netanyahu won't speak to PM Carney is very telling. Israel can go fuck itself.

(To be clear: I'm not anti-Jewish, I'm anti this Israeli administration and the genocide being waged against Palestinian people)

Anti-BDS laws - Wikipedia

@chad

Remember back in 2014 when Russia annexed the Crimea and Stephen Harper condemned the action and imposed sanctions on Russia?

Then, from the other side of his mouth, he called the BDS movement antisemitic for targeting Israel (not Jews) for effectively annexing parts of the West Bank to build settlements.

That said, action needs to taken to protect Jews in Canada from retaliation for the actions of the Israeli government over which they have no control and many likely oppose.

@chad

While I too am against what the state of Isreal is currently doing to Palestinians, I think its an important generalization that any anti-BDS legislation is an infringement of your right to politicize your wallet and spending decisions.

Our household gave up Sodastream (Israeli) and Starbucks amongst others over Gaza. The notion that BDS is hate speech is ludicrous - its not hate speech or even libel if you point out that someone (prooveably) is committing war crimes.

@tezoatlipoca When you have Israeli soldiers attacking a peaceful Palestinian wedding, I'm really not sure how Netanyahu can justify anything anymore.

I'd have thought that the happenings in 1938 would be lessons we all should have learned from.

Video credit unknown.

I can no longer be silent on this.

@chad @tezoatlipoca

Sodastream is Israeli? Disappointing 😞

I’ll keep using mine because we already own it, 🤷‍♂️ and because I have found a local (Edmonton) service that will exchange filled for empty cartridges on my doorstep without engaging with the corp itself. (and we never bought the syrups in the first place)

@DavidM_yeg @chad Well, they're owned by Pepsi but headquartered in Isreal.

Thankfully, Ninja (airfryers, etc.) have a competitor product and their CO2 cylinders are compatible.

What do you use for syrups? Our grocery has some drink mixes in 1L bottles, but they're stupid high in sugar. And I hate the little drink flavor 50ml bottles for all the waste. Am about to mail order a commercial soda fountain box, but $30 for 10L is a big commitment for diet cola.

@tezoatlipoca

I actually enjoy straight carbonated water at times, other times I mix drinks using frozen juice concentrates (lemonade and mango punch are nice together) which can be added to a glass by the spoonful … unfortunately the last manufacturer of frozen juice concentrates in Canada has stopped production so I expect I’ll need to find a new way to flavour my water very soon.

@chad

@DavidM_yeg @chad yeah, there's still a supply of frozen juice ctrate in my grocer's freezer but its shrinking.. could be when I go this week they're gone. What an odd business decision that is.

@chad @tezoatlipoca

Apparently sales have been steadily slipping since the 80s. Lots of other companies have already gotten out and at some point I guess the specialized equipment, demanding transportation and storage requirements stop making business sense if not enough are buying it. It’s an environmental disaster though because the replacements are ‘fully hydrated’ beverages, ie: using fuel to ship vast quantities of flavoured water around in a million plastic containers. 😞

Mostly I just drink water from the tap. 🤷‍♂️

@chad As an observation, I don't think anyone in the world needs to say "I'm not anti-Jewish" anymore when they say they hate Israel. You can respect Jewish people and hate Zionists. it's not exclusive.

@Netraven I'm saying it because I administer a large instance and need to make my stance clear.

I am very conscious that the Jewish community is grappling with this, and I know through meeting with them in the past, they are good people, are grappling with what's going on and should have the license to disavow what Netanyahu is doing.

So I'm saving space while I expect the leader needs to be held accountable for the genocide he's caused.

So to this extent, if it wasn't already clear, Jewish Canadians are safe on our instance as long as you can disagree with the Palestinian genocide.

For those reading this, you don't need to publicly make a statement, but holy smokes there's people dying.

Meaning Israel finds criticism of their actions in Canada inconvenient and wants our freedom to speak and act limited, more than it already has been… thinking of the dismantling and attacking of anti-war encampments at UofA and elsewhere… and the Edmonton Police Service somehow can’t understand why our Chief of Police going to Israel to learn from Israeli police stinks and makes Edmontonians angry.
