Voter fraud almost never happens in the #US. Still, in order to “prevent” it, #Trump is pushing #Republicans to pass the SAVE America Act, an #ElectionLaw that would, among many provisions, require people to show photo identification to #vote [proof of citizenship].

It’s a solution in search of a problem — a solution that narrowly passed in the #House last week & is now under debate in the #Senate.

The #law is unlikely to pass there, given deeply felt opposition from #Democrats who can block it with a filibuster. #Republicans lack the 60 votes they need to overcome one.

#Trump insists they pass the law anyway, even if they have to kill the #filibuster to do so. Trump has vowed that he would refuse to sign any other legislation until the bill was sent to his desk. He has called the measure his “No. 1 priority,” saying it would “guarantee the midterms” for his party.

Most Americans support the idea of voter identification, polls say. But voter identification is not really what the #SAVE America Act is all about, according to #Democrats & #election experts who oppose it. (Its full name is the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act.) They say it’s about disenfranchisement. They say that it could hand the #Trump admin data it could distort to claim widespread “voter fraud” when #Republicans lose races.

@Nonilex this is the same crap Republicans have been using to rally their base at the polls via referendum at the state level, typically at the most opportune moment to swing the vote in their favor. People come out in droves thinking they're doing their civic duty by eradicating "fraud." Doing this at the Fed level will remove this poker chip from everyone's hands once and for all. When gerrymandering is removed from their playbook, it amounts to nothing but wasted resources. Fools.
