SUPER aguacate! #avocado
***this avocado is off a tree that NEVER BEFORE produced fruit. Someone asked us to put a rescue beehive there, and the tree is now LOADED with giant avocados. Anyway, that's why people keep asking us to put any captured swarms of bees on their property. #pollination #beekeeping
@ai6yr
My neighbor has a huge avocado tree that doesn't produce fruit I will tell him this fact about the bees.
@Coho It's possible! Cross pollination required for a lot of avocado varieties. Probably need another tree nearby, however. (with bees)
@ai6yr
He was told it was a self pollinator. Do avocados have male and female trees?
@Coho Some do...
@ai6yr
I wonder how you tell if you have a male or female tree.

@Coho

Aha, here we go. You need Class A cultivars (receive pollen in morning) with Class B cultivars (distribute pollen in the morning). I don't know how you tell which is which. Typically growers put several of matching varieties in a grove.

@ai6yr
I will pass on this info to him. Maybe the guy at the nursery knows about class a and b cultivars

@Coho Oooh, here's a good reference from UC Riverside.

Avocado Flowering Basics

Hofshi | Del Rey Avocado THE FLOWER Avocado productivity is influenced by many factors and involves many steps. The critical first step, however, is the process of pollination which leads to fertilization and fruit set. Pollination occurs when pollen is deposited on a receptive stigma. This poster describes some of the considerations pertaining to avocado pollination.
